Understanding California Marriage Licenses

The marriage license is something that the couple is responsible for obtaining from the County Clerk’s office. Fortunately the process of obtaining one in California is very easy. You may get your license from the County Clerk's office up to 90 days prior to the wedding date, and will need to bring photo ID as well as provide some personal information and pay a nominal fee.

In many cases, you can provide most of the information online ahead of time, making the visit to the County Clerk's ofice quicker and more efficient. They will print the license at their office, have you ensure that the information is correct, and you will take the license with you. You’ll then give the marriage license to Jon before the wedding starts. He'll take care of the needed signatures and will then return it to the County Clerk's office following the wedding.
